Summary
- Windows 11 search will gain an option to disable web results.
- The feature was previewed for Insiders before the Build conference.
- Users can toggle web search results off in settings soon.

Microsoft is developing a new setting for Windows 11 that will allow users to disable web search results within the system's search function. This option was demonstrated to members of the Windows Insiders Program in San Francisco. The setting is expected to be located under Privacy & security > Search, within a section for "Show suggested search results," where users can toggle off web searches and potentially Microsoft Store results.
Previously, users resorted to complex registry edits to remove web results, which were criticized for adding clutter and promoting Bing. This upcoming feature offers a user-friendly solution to this long-standing issue. Microsoft also indicated improvements to search speeds and File Explorer performance, with internal builds showing a 30% enhancement in bulk delete function speed.
Additional features showcased in Insider preview builds include a movable taskbar and the ability to search using as few as two characters. These enhancements are anticipated to roll out in upcoming mainstream Windows 11 updates. The company's focus on OS performance and a calmer interface comes as a response to user concerns about AI feature prioritization.
