US Misses Out on Global Smartphone Surge
12 Jul
Summary
- Many popular global smartphone brands are unavailable in the US.
- Xiaomi is the third most popular vendor worldwide.
- US market incompatibility, not bans, limits Xiaomi's presence.

Many consumers in the United States are unaware that they are systematically excluded from a wide array of popular mobile technology. While the US market predominantly features smartphones from Apple, Samsung, Google, and Motorola, international markets boast a much broader selection.
Brands such as Oppo, RealMe, Honor, Huawei, and Xiaomi are highly prevalent elsewhere. Xiaomi, in particular, is the third most popular mobile vendor globally, capturing nearly 10% of the market.
Contrary to common assumptions that US restrictions on Chinese technology are the sole reason for this unavailability, Xiaomi phones were only briefly subject to such measures a few years ago.
The enduring challenge stems from Xiaomi's inability to establish a significant presence in the US market on its own merits. The company's business principles and operating model are not aligned with the American commercial landscape, while its offerings continue to excel internationally.
