WhatsApp Cuts Off Old Android Phones in 2026

WhatsApp is set to discontinue support for older Android devices, specifically those running Android versions prior to Android 6. This cessation of service will take effect on September 8, 2026.

The change primarily affects smartphones operating on Android 5.0 and 5.1. While an exact list of models varies, a wide range of ageing smartphones released before 2014 are expected to be impacted. This includes older devices from manufacturers like Samsung, Sony, HTC, LG, and Huawei that still operate on outdated Android software.

This move is a routine part of WhatsApp's update cycle, aimed at enhancing security, performance, and compatibility with new features. Older operating systems often cannot support advanced security protocols and updates. Users with affected phones should check their device's Android version and update if possible. If their device cannot support newer updates, upgrading to a more recent smartphone will be necessary to continue using WhatsApp. Experts also strongly recommend backing up chats and media in advance to avoid losing important data.
