Meta Charges for WhatsApp AI Bots Amidst Regulatory Pressure

Meta will now charge developers for AI chatbot usage on its WhatsApp platform, specifically in areas where regulators have mandated such access. This pricing model, set to begin on February 16, will cost developers $0.0691 per AI-generated message. The initial rollout targets Italy, where the national competition watchdog had requested Meta suspend its prior ban on third-party chatbots.

This new fee structure comes after Meta previously blocked third-party AI chatbots on January 15, citing system strain. The company's stance shifted as regulatory bodies in the EU, Brazil, and Italy initiated antitrust investigations. While a Brazilian court recently sided with Meta, overturning an order to suspend the policy, the company is proceeding with charges in Italy.
