Waymo Seeks Uber Exit Amid Robotaxi Tensions

Alphabet-owned Waymo is reportedly looking to end its partnership with Uber, a deal that made its autonomous vehicles available on Uber's ride-hailing network in Austin and Atlanta. Waymo has informed Uber of its intention to launch robotaxis on its own application in these cities starting January 2028. The existing contract between Waymo and Uber for these markets is slated to conclude in May 2028. This development comes after the companies' collaboration in Phoenix concluded earlier this year.

Recent months have seen increased friction between Waymo and Uber. Uber's Chief Technology Officer had previously voiced concerns about the safety of Waymo's robotaxis. Additionally, Uber's CEO had publicly commented on the performance of Waymo's vehicles in sensitive areas like school zones and during emergencies. Waymo has also found itself at odds with Uber in several emerging policy debates concerning the regulation of robotaxis.
