Vizag's AI Hub: Cooling Innovations Slash Water Use
18 Oct
Summary
- Air-cooled systems to minimize freshwater usage.
- Over 80% of limited water for landscaping and facilities.
- Dedicated industrial water lines prevent household competition.
AdaniConneX's planned data centre campuses in Visakhapatnam, developed with Google, are set to revolutionize water usage in digital infrastructure. These facilities will employ air-cooled systems, significantly reducing the need for traditional water-based cooling methods. The project aims to keep freshwater consumption across three sites below the volume of an Olympic-sized swimming pool.
Around 80% of the limited freshwater required will be allocated to landscaping, kitchens, and worker facilities, with comprehensive on-site water recycling and reuse systems in place. Notably, the campuses will utilize dedicated industrial water connections, ensuring no draw from municipal lines and avoiding competition with household drinking water needs.
This approach addresses growing concerns over the substantial water requirements of data centres, particularly in regions like Andhra Pradesh. By prioritizing advanced cooling technology and wastewater treatment, the Visakhapatnam project aims to minimize its environmental impact on local water resources and ecologically sensitive areas.
