A new company, Warhound, has launched with $200 million in funding and a $1.2 billion valuation, aiming to genetically engineer advanced working dogs for the U.S. military and emergency services. This initiative, backed by investors including In-Q-Tel and Sequoia, seeks to overcome the challenges of a dwindling supply of capable working dogs and reduce reliance on foreign sources.
Warhound's technology, stemming from Colossal Biosciences' expertise, will edit genes to enhance dogs' health, longevity, and specialized skills like bomb detection. Andruil will contribute hardware and software, such as protective vests with data sensors, to further support these animals and their handlers.
The first batch of these genetically engineered dogs is slated for cloning and incubation, with expectations for them to be born early in 2027. These dogs are intended to enter service within two years, with plans for their eventual retirement into programs like the American Humane Society's Military Working Dog Reunification Program.
