21 Aug
Summary
- Walmart is adding Google Pay tap-to-pay to all US stores by end of 2026.
- Currently, only Android Google Pay is supported; Apple Pay is not.
- Tap-to-pay at fuel stations is planned for mid-2027 rollout.

Starting next week, Walmart customers across the United States will gain the ability to use Google Pay's tap-to-pay feature. This marks a significant expansion of their collaboration with Google. The retail giant plans to implement this contactless payment system in all Walmart and Sam's Club locations nationwide by the end of 2026. Further expansion is scheduled for mid-2027, introducing the technology to fuel stations.
This contactless hardware upgrade aims to boost shopper convenience by allowing quick taps to pay, reducing time spent in checkout lines compared to traditional methods. The feature is accessible through the Google Wallet app on Android phones, where users can add payment cards. Transactions are secured using encrypted tokens, ensuring card numbers are not shared with retailers.
Currently, only Google Pay on Android devices is compatible with this new system; Apple Pay is not accepted. If a phone is lost or stolen, users can remotely lock or erase their device and contact their bank to secure their accounts. This widespread adoption of contactless payments is set to simplify and expedite the shopping experience for millions.
