VLC Player Hits 7 Billion Downloads Globally

The universally free and offline VLC media player, a project by the non-profit VideoLAN, has now surpassed an astonishing 7 billion downloads worldwide. This significant achievement was recently confirmed by Jean-Baptiste Kempf, the president and lead developer of VLC. The download count has seen a substantial increase, reaching this new peak approximately 18 months after it crossed the 6 billion download threshold in January 2025.

The development team continues to expand VLC's reach, recently porting the player to Amazon's new Vega OS for televisions. They are also committed to supporting a wide array of platforms and codecs. A major focus is the ongoing development of VLC 4, which is reported to be taking considerable time. Previously, VideoLAN had hinted at AI-powered translation and subtitle features using local models, though their release status remains unconfirmed.
