Virgin Media O2 has introduced Europe's first satellite-to-mobile service, a groundbreaking initiative that extends mobile connectivity to previously unreachable areas. This new service, named O2 Satellite, uses SpaceX's Starlink network to provide messaging and app access, including WhatsApp and Google Maps, directly to regular smartphones.
Customers can now connect in locations without traditional network coverage for a monthly fee of three pounds. This expansion is set to increase O2's coverage of Britain's landmass from 89% to 95%. The service will initially be compatible with Samsung's latest devices, offering a vital lifeline for individuals engaged in outdoor pursuits or travel.
This development marks a significant advancement in mobile connectivity, with Virgin Media O2's CEO highlighting its role in bringing new coverage to an area equivalent to two-thirds the size of Wales. A similar service was launched by U.S. carrier T-Mobile in July for $10 per month, indicating a growing trend in satellite-based mobile communication.
