A resident of New Braunfels, Texas, recently experienced a frightening close call with a sophisticated scam. A caller impersonating a Verizon fraud investigator used official-sounding details, including fake case and cancellation numbers, to gain the victim's trust.
The scammer sent convincing text alerts that mimicked real Verizon security notifications, prompting the victim to "verify" his identity. These messages warned of potential password changes and device authentication requests, creating a sense of urgency.
Under pressure, the victim clicked a link to "deny" an action, which inadvertently allowed the scammer to proceed with unauthorized changes. This included altering the victim's password and ordering an upgrade to his daughter's phone.
The scheme unraveled when the victim noticed the unauthorized phone upgrade and subsequent password change. He then contacted Verizon's actual fraud department, who confirmed the provided case and cancellation numbers were bogus and helped secure his account by implementing two-factor authentication.
Verizon acknowledges that such scams are increasingly common and actively works to detect and prevent them. They advise customers to always hang up on suspicious calls and use official channels, like the carrier's app or website, to verify any alerts or make changes.
