Army Eyes AI Power with Base Data Centers
26 Mar
Summary
- Army seeks data centers on bases for AI weapon systems.
- Companies will build and operate facilities on underutilized land.
- This is the Pentagon's first hyperscale data center initiative.

The U.S. Army is advancing its strategic capabilities through potential partnerships with Carlyle and CyrusOne. Negotiations are underway to establish commercial data centers on military installations in Texas and Utah.
Under this innovative plan, these private companies will be responsible for constructing and managing the data centers on land within the bases that is currently underutilized. In return for this infrastructure, the Army anticipates gaining access to a significant portion of the data center's computing power.
This computing power is crucial for the Army's growing fleet of AI-driven weapon systems. Army Secretary Dan Driscoll highlighted this project as the Pentagon's inaugural hyperscale data center, emphasizing its importance in providing soldiers with the necessary compute resources for modern conflict scenarios. Excess power generated by these facilities could also be directed back into local energy grids.
