UpScrolled Faces Backlash Over Unchecked Hate Speech
11 Feb
Summary
- UpScrolled users report racial slurs in usernames and hashtags.
- App claims to review and remove inappropriate content.
- Founder pledges to expand moderation team and tech infrastructure.

UpScrolled, a social media platform experiencing rapid growth, is confronting serious challenges with content moderation. Since its founding in 2025, the app has attracted over 4 million downloads, yet users have reported pervasive use of racial slurs and hate speech in usernames and hashtags.
Despite UpScrolled's claims of actively reviewing and removing inappropriate content, and assuring users they are working to expand moderation capacity, accounts featuring offensive language have remained active days after being reported. The platform's own FAQ states a policy against hate speech and harmful content, which appears difficult to enforce.
The ADL has also noted the rise of antisemitic and extremist content on UpScrolled. In response to these concerns, founder Issam Hijazi released a video acknowledging the issue. He confirmed that harmful content against the platform's terms of service has been uploaded.
Hijazi pledged that UpScrolled is rapidly expanding its content moderation team and upgrading its technology infrastructure to more effectively catch and remove harmful content, aiming to foster a healthy and respectful digital environment.
