Modders have recently achieved a significant breakthrough by implementing an unofficial version of Nvidia's DLSS 5 technology into various video games. This development originated from code extracted from an early-access build of NBA 2K27, allowing for AI upscaling to be applied to titles such as Skyrim, Cyberpunk 2077, and Grand Theft Auto V.
Initial tests demonstrate noticeable changes in game visuals, with character models and environmental textures receiving enhanced definition. For example, in Control, facial features become more pronounced, and in GTA: San Andreas, textures and shadows are improved. However, these enhancements come at a cost, with modders reporting substantial performance impacts.
Players have observed drastic frame rate drops, with some experiencing their FPS being halved. The process of swapping between DLSS 5 presets also consumes a significant amount of VRAM. This unofficial DLSS 5 has been tested on various Nvidia graphics cards, including RTX 4090 and RTX 4080 models.
Reactions to this mod are divided, with some appreciating the visual improvements while others criticize the resulting 'AI-enhanced' aesthetic. Nvidia officially announced DLSS 5 in March, promising real-time photoreal lighting and materials, with a planned release this fall. However, the initial reveal faced backlash for altering character appearances, a concern Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang addressed by stating the tool respects artistic control.
