Ukraine has begun converting its substantial fleet of American-supplied Humvees into remotely operated ground vehicles. The Kaban retrofit kit, developed by Drone Fight Group, allows existing Humvees to be controlled remotely. Three such converted vehicles have already been delivered to Ukrainian military units, including the 3rd Army Corps and the 429th Separate Unmanned Systems Regiment "Achilles."
The Kaban kit's primary advantage is its non-intrusive installation, bolting onto the vehicle without structural modification. This enables crews to effortlessly switch between remote control and manual driving modes as mission requirements dictate. The system's primary communication link is SpaceX's Starlink satellite internet, with analog video and radio communication serving as crucial fallback options.
Operators controlling the Kaban system receive comprehensive telemetry, including vehicle movement, lighting controls, and two-way audio. Navigation is facilitated by a digital map interface with predicted trajectory overlays. Even if GPS signals are jammed, operators can manually correct the vehicle's course. Should the primary connection fail entirely, the Kaban system is designed to bring the vehicle to a safe, automatic stop.
This initiative is part of a broader trend in Ukraine towards increased ground robotics, with over 100,000 logistics and evacuation missions recorded by August 20, 2026. However, unlike many purpose-built platforms, Kaban leverages existing military hardware, offering a potentially more economical and rapid path to fleet-scale automation. The versatility of the Kaban system is further enhanced by optional equipment such as thermal cameras and drone launching platforms.
