UK Toddlers Glued to Tablets: Experts Warn Parents
28 May
Summary
- A quarter of UK children under three own their own tablet.
- Pre-schoolers use tablets for over an hour on weekdays.
- Experts recommend family digital literacy programmes for parents.

Ownership of tablet computers among UK toddlers is widespread, with a quarter of children under three possessing their own device. Research indicates that 31% of children aged five and under have their own tablet in households where at least one tablet is present. These young users spend an average of one hour and 19 minutes on weekdays engaging with apps, often without direct parental supervision.
Researchers from Sheffield and Edinburgh universities are advocating for "family digital literacy programmes" to support parents. They stress the importance of selecting age-appropriate apps, noting that some popular games are not beneficial for this age group. While apps can foster creativity, content with excessive ads or in-app purchases can be detrimental. Some children have encountered uncomfortable content or made accidental purchases, highlighting a need for better parental awareness of safety settings.
The study, which surveyed 2,000 parents, also suggests that budget tablets and older models passed down from parents contribute to high ownership rates. Experts recommend that early years settings should increase access to tablets to encourage creative app use and provide better training for professionals. Concerns exist that excessive screen time may displace traditional play and social skill development.
