Connectivity in Britain's rural communities has seen a significant enhancement with the upgrade of over 105 mobile masts to provide 4G service. These improvements, distributed across Wales, Scotland, and England, will extend high-speed mobile connections to approximately 9,500 residential premises and 400 businesses, collectively covering an expansive area of over 1,550 square miles. This development is a key milestone for the Shared Rural Network (SRN) initiative.
The SRN, established in 2020 through a collaboration between the UK government and mobile operators like EE, Virgin Media O2, and Vodafone, is designed to improve rural mobile coverage. With an investment of up to £500 million from the government and a matching commitment from the industry, the project targets 95% 4G coverage across the UK by 2025. As of now, the SRN has already surpassed initial goals, achieving 96% 4G coverage nationwide.
