UK Fusion Energy Ltd (UKFE), the entity responsible for developing Britain's prototype fusion power plant, has solidified its partnership with the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) as a Tier 1 member. This strategic move establishes a direct channel for manufacturing firms to engage with the Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production (Step) project in West Burton, Nottinghamshire.
The collaboration is set to inject up to £10 million into research and development. This funding is earmarked for transforming STEP's innovative designs into tangible components and systems, which will then undergo rigorous testing and qualification at scale. UKFE's new contract vehicle is designed to streamline commissioning work across critical areas including advanced manufacturing, automation, and digital engineering.
In parallel, UKFE is preparing to launch six significant industry-facing procurement opportunities. These packages span crucial domains such as systems engineering, fusion plant controls, the fuel cycle, and breeder blankets. This initiative is expected to integrate specialized industrial capabilities into key aspects of the Step design and delivery, with multiple industry consortia reportedly forming to pursue these opportunities.
