Ubisoft has unveiled a new game prototype, "Teammates," which showcases AI-powered companions capable of understanding both natural language commands and visual context within the game environment. Building on previous AI advancements, this project is currently undergoing a closed playtest with several hundred players.
The prototype places players in a dystopian setting, tasked with navigating enemy territory to find missing team members, with AI teammates being crucial for success. The AI characters, including an assistant named Jaspar and robotic companions Pablo and Sofia, demonstrate an awareness of the player's viewpoint, positioning themselves strategically based on in-game visuals.
This innovative technology aims to offer unique, personalized gaming experiences where player input dynamically shapes AI reactions. Ubisoft is collecting feedback from the playtest to inform future research, with the underlying middleware already compatible with their Snowdrop and Anvil engines for potential integration into other projects.
