Uber Employees Test Drive Nuro's Robotaxis in SF

Select Uber employees are currently testing autonomous rides in Lucid Gravity SUVs, powered by Nuro's self-driving technology. These test rides, operating in San Francisco, represent a key phase before a planned public launch expected later this year. The partnership between Uber and Nuro, solidified with a multi-million dollar investment in July 2025, is progressing steadily.

These advanced robotaxis utilize Nuro's system, which is integrated with Nvidia's Drive AGX Thor computer. The Lucid Gravity SUV features a suite of high-resolution cameras, lidar, and radar sensors to navigate its environment. Nuro has deployed 100 of these modified SUVs across multiple U.S. cities for engineering fleet testing.

Uber aims to operate a premium robotaxi service, potentially with third-party assistance. The production of these unique Lucid Gravity vehicles is anticipated to begin in late 2026, according to a previous regulatory filing. Nuro has been conducting closed-course and public road testing since late last year.

These employee test drives are crucial for evaluating the entire autonomous system, from vehicle performance to rider experience, especially the critical pickup and drop-off operations. This real-world data collection is vital for refining the service before its wider rollout.
