Early Wi-Fi 8 Router Hits Market Before Standard Finalizes
30 May
Summary
- TP-Link's new Wi-Fi 8 router, Archer 8, is slated for October launch.
- Wi-Fi 8 standard is not finalized and expected in early 2028.
- Early Wi-Fi 8 testing shows potential throughput and signal improvements.

TP-Link is set to release its first Wi-Fi 8 router, the Archer 8, in October. This move precedes the official finalization of the Wi-Fi 8 standard, not expected until early 2028. Additional Wi-Fi 8 products, including mesh systems and range extenders, are planned for release in 2027 and early 2028.
While specific details of the Archer 8 are scarce, early testing of Wi-Fi 8 suggests notable advancements. These include up to 33% higher throughput over longer distances and improved signal sensitivity on 5GHz and 6GHz bands compared to Wi-Fi 7. The new standard also introduces features like multi-AP coordination to reduce interference.
However, consumers may not experience the full benefits of Wi-Fi 8 for years. Many devices still lack Wi-Fi 7 compatibility, let alone Wi-Fi 8. Interoperability issues mean older devices will limit a Wi-Fi 8 router's capabilities. Furthermore, TP-Link's early router may miss features once the final Wi-Fi 8 standard is established, potentially making it a premature purchase.
