TikTok has reached a settlement in a significant lawsuit concerning social media addiction, thus avoiding a trial that was slated to commence jury selection on Tuesday. The specific terms of this agreement have not been disclosed. This development comes approximately one week after Snap also settled in the same case.
The trial, which is expected to continue in Los Angeles, will now feature Meta and YouTube as the sole defendants. A lawyer for the plaintiff expressed satisfaction with the resolution. The lawsuit originated from a 2023 case filed by a California woman, identified in court documents as 'K.G.M.', who contended that the platforms were addictive and caused her harm as a child.
This case represents the first among several high-profile legal actions against social media companies to reach the trial phase this year. Meta is anticipating its own trial in early February in New Mexico. TikTok and Snap are collectively facing numerous other trials in California courts throughout the year.
