TikTok AI Summaries Go Wildly Off-Topic
11 May
Summary
- TikTok's AI video summaries generated inaccurate and unrelated text.
- Users reported AI captions describing blueberries instead of celebrities.
- The platform is now limiting AI technology to product identification.

TikTok had been experimenting with AI-driven text summaries for videos among a select group of users. However, this initiative encountered significant issues, producing numerous inaccurate captions and "hallucinations."
Instead of accurately describing video content, the AI generated nonsensical summaries. Examples included labeling a dog-training video as "intricate origami art" and a celebrity speaking as "various blueberries with different toppings."
Due to these widespread errors, which users described as "garbage that has nothing to do with the video," TikTok is now curtailing the technology. The platform will reportedly limit the AI's function to identifying products within videos rather than providing comprehensive summaries.
