Threads Hits 500M Users: Communities Drive Growth
16 Jun
Summary
- Threads reached 500 million monthly users this month.
- Community features are credited with fueling recent user growth.
- Meta expects Threads to not be a meaningful revenue driver by 2026.

Meta's text-based social network, Threads, has achieved a major milestone, welcoming over 500 million monthly users as of this month. This figure represents a substantial increase of approximately 100 million users since August of last year. The company has specifically highlighted its "communities" feature as the primary catalyst for this recent user acquisition.
While Meta has not provided current daily active user (DAU) figures since October, when it reported 150 million, the company stated that DAUs are growing strongly year-over-year globally. Despite this significant user engagement, Threads has not yet translated into substantial revenue. Meta's Chief Financial Officer indicated that the service is not expected to be a meaningful revenue driver in 2026.
In conjunction with these user metrics, Threads is introducing several new features. These updates focus on enhancing the community experience with a new "discovery hub" for finding groups and badges for top contributors. Additionally, a "live chats" feature is slated for a wider rollout by July. The platform is also incorporating "your algo" controls, allowing users to privately adjust their algorithmic preferences, similar to recent Instagram updates.
Recent growth in Asia, particularly in South Korea and Japan, has been notable, with time spent on the app increasing by 80 percent and 130 percent, respectively, compared to last year. The company's long-term vision, as expressed by Mark Zuckerberg, is for Threads to potentially reach a billion users.
