Waymo's Warning: Tesla's Autonomy Approach Lacks Key Sensors

Waymo, a leader in autonomous driving, has voiced significant concerns about Tesla's sensor strategy. Waymo's VP of Onboard Software emphasized that cameras alone are insufficient for achieving true full autonomy, a conclusion drawn from their extensive experience of over 200 million autonomous miles. The company advocates for a multi-sensor approach, integrating cameras, lidar, and radar to create a redundant and comprehensive view of the environment, ensuring safety even if one sensor fails.

This stance directly contrasts with Elon Musk's known skepticism towards lidar, which he considers a "crutch." Waymo also highlighted the importance of high-definition (HD) maps as a crucial "prior" that aids in the validation process and provides a reliable reference for complex driving maneuvers, which Tesla currently downplays.

Furthermore, Waymo distinguishes its platform by stating that a fully autonomous system cannot be built upon a Level 2 driver-assist system. Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD) is currently classified as Level 2, requiring drivers to remain alert and ready to take control at all times. Waymo currently operates its autonomous vehicles in 11 cities, while Tesla is preparing to launch its Cybercab.
