Tesla Rebrands FSD to Assisted Driving in Europe
3 Nov
Summary
- Tesla renamed its FSD tech to Tesla Assisted Driving in Europe.
- Germany's transport ministry found the 'Full Self-Driving' name misleading.
- BMW will launch its 'Symbiotic Drive' automated tech next year.
Following intervention from Germany's transport ministry, Tesla has agreed to change the name of its Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology to 'Tesla Assisted Driving' across Europe and the UK. The ministry stated that the original name was "somewhat misleading," emphasizing that it is a driver assistance system requiring constant driver attention. This rebranding has been implemented on Tesla's European websites.
The move aligns with stricter marketing regulations for assisted driving systems. In the UK, specific terms like 'automated' and 'self-driving' will be reserved for authorized vehicles under the upcoming 2024 Automated Vehicles Act, expected to take effect on January 7, 2027. Vehicles must meet a stringent test of not requiring human monitoring to be classified as self-driving.
Meanwhile, BMW is set to enhance its automated driving capabilities with the upcoming launch of its 'Symbiotic Drive' technology in Germany early next year. This SAE Level 2 system will offer navigation-guided assistance for urban driving, capable of handling turns, right-of-way, and roundabout navigation. BMW emphasizes its system's seamless integration with the driver, allowing for intervention without system shutdown. The technology will be delivered via an over-the-air update to select BMW models.
