Tesla's Six-Seat Model Y L Lands in India

Tesla is preparing to launch a new six-seat version of its Model Y electric SUV in India, potentially as early as next week. This Model Y L variant, which debuted globally in China, offers a three-row seating configuration designed for families requiring additional space. It will be imported from Tesla's Shanghai Gigafactory, the sole production site for this model. The introduction of the Model Y L is part of Tesla's strategy to invigorate its sales in India, a market characterized by significant import tariffs and slower-than-anticipated demand. Tesla aims to refresh its existing product line rather than introduce entirely new platforms, a tactic employed globally to sustain interest in an increasingly competitive electric vehicle market. The company's sales in India have been modest, with registration data for the previous year showing only 227 cars sold, leading to discounts on imported vehicles to clear inventory. Globally, Tesla has seen its sales decline in recent years, losing its top EV seller position to BYD. The Model Y L has already been confirmed for markets like Australia and New Zealand, indicating Tesla's broader plans for this variant.
