Tesla Model Y First to Meet New ADAS Safety Benchmark
8 May
Summary
- Tesla's 2026 Model Y is the first car to meet NHTSA's new ADAS benchmark.
- New tests assess pedestrian braking, blind spot warning, and lane assist.
- Updated criteria aim to keep pace with rapidly advancing vehicle technology.

The 2026 Tesla Model Y has achieved a landmark safety designation, being the first vehicle to satisfy the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) newly established benchmark for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).
This development is part of an update to NHTSA's New Car Assessment Program (NCAP), which now incorporates four critical pass-fail tests. These assessments specifically evaluate a vehicle's performance in automatic emergency braking for pedestrians, blind spot warning systems, blind spot intervention capabilities, and lane assist functions designed to maintain the vehicle's position within its lane.
The introduction of these advanced driver assistance criteria in 2024 by NHTSA is a direct response to the swift advancements in vehicle technology and the proliferation of proprietary branding for these features, which often lack standardized performance benchmarks. The new rating specifically applies to 2026 Tesla Model Y vehicles that were assembled on or after November 12, 2025.
NHTSA's NCAP is also responsible for the government's widely recognized 5-Star safety rating program, which includes comprehensive testing for frontal and side crashworthiness, rollover resistance, and general crash avoidance. The agency has been contacted for information on other vehicles currently undergoing evaluation against these new ADAS benchmarks.
