Tesla FSD Probe: Regulators Demand Answers on Crashes

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has intensified its investigation into Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD) system. The probe focuses on over 60 complaints alleging that Teslas, while using FSD, have failed to obey traffic signals and have entered oncoming lanes. As part of this preliminary investigation, NHTSA requested comprehensive data from Tesla.
Tesla has been granted an extension until February 23 to comply with NHTSA's extensive information request. This includes details on all US-sold Teslas, FSD usage statistics, and a thorough review of customer complaints, field reports, and lawsuits related to traffic law violations. The automaker cited the holiday period and other ongoing NHTSA requests as reasons for needing more time.
Meanwhile, Tesla is altering its FSD business model. CEO Elon Musk announced that the option to purchase FSD outright will end on February 14. Following this date, customers will be required to pay a $99 monthly fee to access the partially automated driver assist system.
