Tesla EVs Now Power Homes During Outages
7 Oct
Summary
- Model 3 and Y can now power homes during outages.
- Feature requires Tesla's Powerwall 3; older versions support coming soon.
- Newer Model 3/Y orders from Oct 1st onward are guaranteed compatible.

Tesla is broadening its Powershare Home Backup capability, enabling specific Model 3 and Model Y owners to utilize their electric vehicle batteries for home power during electricity outages. This innovative feature was initially exclusive to the Cybertruck and mandates the ownership of Tesla's Powerwall 3. Future updates are expected to include support for Powerwall 2 and Powerwall Plus.
Tesla indicates that the Model 3 and Model Y, particularly Premium and Performance variants, can provide over two days of home backup power. This extends the functionality beyond typical EV use, offering a significant advantage during power disruptions. However, this feature is currently noted as available only in the United States and Puerto Rico.
Compatibility is assured for Tesla Model 3 and Model Y vehicles ordered on or after October 1st, as these models are equipped with the required PCS2 Lite inverter. Older models may not possess this crucial component. Currently, the larger Model S and Model X are not included in this rollout, and Tesla's Powershare Grid Support remains exclusive to the Cybertruck.
