TCL's New Mini LED: Big Claims, Mixed Results
20 Feb
Summary
- New SQD Mini LED tech claims advanced color and brightness.
- Actual tests show DCI-P3 color at 97.7%, not 100%.
- Brightness in recommended modes did not surpass previous tech.

TCL introduced its SQD Mini LED technology in the flagship X11L TV, aiming to combine the color benefits of RGB technology with advancements in mini-LED. This new technology uses a single-color backlight and an enhanced quantum dot layer for improved color efficiency and range.
Despite TCL's claims of 100% BT.2020 color gamut and 10,000 nits of brightness, independent testing showed the X11L achieved 91.8% of BT.2020 and 97.7% of the more relevant DCI-P3 color gamut. These figures, while strong for mini-LED, did not surpass previous models or competing RGB technologies like the Hisense UX116.
Brightness measurements in recommended modes, such as Filmmaker Mode, also failed to reach claimed peaks, with Vivid mode reaching 9,394 nits in a 5% window. The X11L's brightness in these modes did not significantly exceed older mini-LED TVs, raising questions about SQD Mini LED's advancement.
While the X11L's color accuracy is noted as impeccable, the overall performance suggests that RGB Mini LED technology may still be the more compelling path for future television development. Further real-world testing is needed to assess factors like blooming and shadow detail.
