New Airport Metro: More Space, Smarter Travel for Sydney

The first of 12 new driverless metro trains destined for Sydney's new international airport line has arrived from Vienna. These trains, manufactured by Siemens, are notably 30 centimeters wider than existing Sydney metro trains, providing increased aisle space and dedicated luggage storage. This enhanced capacity and comfort are designed to better serve airport travelers. The new carriages also incorporate diverse seating arrangements, including flexible bays, designated wheelchair spaces, and storage for up to eight bicycles.

The 23-kilometer metro line, a significant infrastructure project, is experiencing delays and is now expected to open approximately 18 months later than its original October target. Despite the delays, the trains are progressing to dynamic testing. Once operational, the line will feature six stations connecting St Marys to the new Bradfield city and the airport. Initially, the line will operate 12 trains per hour, with the capability to increase to 20 trains per hour to accommodate projected passenger growth.
