Switch 2 handheld mode gets major upgrade
17 Mar
Summary
- Switch 2 update improves original Switch game visuals in handheld mode.
- Handheld Mode Boost renders older games at docked resolution.
- Some games may not work with Handheld Boost Mode enabled.

Nintendo has rolled out a crucial update for its latest console, version 22.0.0, which significantly improves the handheld gaming experience for original Switch titles. The most impactful addition is "Handheld Mode Boost," designed to resolve the blurry visuals experienced when playing older games on the Switch 2's larger display. This mode essentially tells older games to run at the original Switch's docked TV mode resolution, boosting clarity.
While this new feature ensures sharper visuals and can lead to improved performance, it's not a universal solution. Enabling Handheld Mode Boost treats the attached controllers like a Pro Controller, disabling motion controls and touchscreen input. Consequently, some games, such as Super Mario Maker 2 and The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD, are currently incompatible with this mode. The update also includes minor enhancements like new virtual game card loading animations and flight mode customizations.
