Valve's Steam Machine Price Shock: $1,349 for 2TB Model!
23 Jun
Summary
- Steam Machine costs $1,049 for 512GB and $1,349 for 2TB.
- Component shortages, especially RAM, force price hikes.
- Valve cannot secure fixed RAM contracts due to supply issues.
The anticipated Steam Machine from Valve is now priced at $1,049 for the 512GB configuration and $1,349 for the 2TB model, excluding controllers. These significant costs stem from Valve's decision not to subsidize hardware and are exacerbated by a global component crisis. Engineers confirmed that securing RAM in 2026 involves unpredictable monthly pricing from vendors like Samsung, Micron, and SK Hynix, with no long-term contracts available.
The scarcity of components like RAM is forcing many hardware manufacturers, including Apple, to consider price increases. Valve's approach to RAM configuration for the Steam Machine will depend on available supply, potentially shipping with either one 16GB stick or two 8GB sticks. While dual-channel memory is objectively superior, Valve claims no measurable difference in gaming performance was observed in their tests between single and dual-channel setups.
