Digital Nomads Slam Starlink's New Travel Limits
17 Jul
Summary
- Starlink is restricting international roaming on cheaper plans starting August 17.
- Expensive unlimited plans will soon cap international use at 30 days per trip.
- Users complain changes price them out and create connectivity issues abroad.

SpaceX is facing backlash from digital nomads and the sailing community over impending changes to its Starlink Roam service. As of August 17, the company will remove international roaming from its lower-cost 100GB and 300GB plans. Only the Roam Unlimited tier will retain international access, but with a new restriction limiting usage to 30 days per trip, down from the previous 60 days. Customers will need to return to their home country or lose service access after this period.
This policy shift is particularly problematic for long-term global travelers like Tim Sander, who previously relied on the discontinued Global Roam plan for continuous international connectivity. He notes that alternative plans are significantly more expensive, with the Global Priority plan costing $650 per month for 500GB. Many users express that these new costs will be prohibitive and that the 30-day limit is insufficient for their travel needs.
While some cross-border use within grouped regions like the US/Canada or Europe remains permitted, users in other areas, such as Asia, Africa, and Mexico, will be affected. The dissatisfaction is evident in online forums, where users are demanding SpaceX reverse these changes, highlighting the impracticality of frequently returning home with permanently installed Starlink equipment on boats.
SpaceX has not commented on the backlash. However, its support pages suggest the Local Priority plan, while capped at 1TB or 2TB for $280 or $530 monthly, allows up to 60 days of international use. Some argue these changes are necessary to prevent misuse in unsupported countries. These adjustments follow recent price increases and modifications to other Starlink plans, including aviation and residential services.
