Cheaper Starlink: Is It Worth the Savings?
8 Mar
Summary
- Budget Starlink offers 80-200 Mbps download, 15-35 Mbps upload.
- Latency remains consistent with premium plans, averaging 22.7ms.
- Savings come with less predictable performance at higher speeds.

SpaceX has introduced more affordable options for its satellite internet service, notably the Residential 200 Mbps plan at $80 per month. This plan aims to broaden access to Starlink's connectivity. It offers download speeds between 80Mbps and 200Mbps, with uploads ranging from 15Mbps to 35Mbps.
Testing of the Residential 200 Mbps plan revealed that average download speeds closely matched the advertised 200Mbps, averaging 214.6Mbps over ten days. Upload speeds also performed as expected, averaging 35.86Mbps. Crucially, latency remained consistent with higher-tier plans, averaging 22.7ms, indicating no significant compromise in responsiveness.
While the budget plan provides strong core performance, its main drawback is less predictable speed consistency. Users may experience fluctuations, particularly at higher download speeds, due to data deprioritization during peak usage. This means savings are balanced against potential variability in performance, especially as more users join the network in an area.
