SpaceX Starlink Mobile Gains FCC Green Light for 15K Satellites
7 Oct
Summary
- FCC approved SpaceX's plan for 15,000 next-gen satellites for Starlink Mobile.
- The service aims to deliver 5G speeds at 150Mbps per user, a significant upgrade.
- SpaceX aims to compete with major mobile carriers using satellites and femtocells.

SpaceX has secured a significant regulatory approval from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to launch and operate 15,000 next-generation satellites for its Starlink Mobile service. This service is designed to deliver satellite connectivity directly to mobile phones. The FCC's decision, made on Tuesday, clears SpaceX's application filed in September 2025 and includes a waiver allowing the company to offer wireless services via satellites without a leasing agreement with a ground-based mobile operator.
The approved constellation aims to revolutionize phone connectivity by delivering 5G speeds of up to 150Mbps per user, vastly exceeding the current 'version 1' of Starlink Mobile. SpaceX plans to utilize both satellites and ground-based femtocells to provide coverage, even in suburban and urban areas. The FCC's approval emphasizes enhanced competition and consumer choice in wireless services, supporting the goal of connecting everyone, everywhere.
Further details of the FCC's grant include authorization for satellites to orbit at lower altitudes, potentially reducing latency. SpaceX is also cleared to use additional radio spectrum acquired from EchoStar for cellular connectivity in the US and abroad. However, the use of EchoStar frequencies is permitted only until the transaction is finalized, scheduled for November 30th, 2027. The company also retains authorization to use T-Mobile's 'PCS G-block' spectrum for cellular operations.
