Deutsche Telekom CEO: SpaceX needs $200B to rival carriers
6 Nov
Summary
- SpaceX needs at least $200 billion to compete with mobile carriers.
- Starlink Mobile's commercial service is expected by early 2028.
- Deutsche Telekom's CEO compares Starlink Mobile's potential disruption to Tesla's impact.
Deutsche Telekom CEO Timotheus Höttges has voiced reservations regarding SpaceX's Starlink Mobile, stating that the company would require a minimum investment of $200 billion to establish itself as a significant competitor in the mobile carrier market. This perspective echoes similar concerns raised by Verizon's CEO regarding the substantial ground network development needed.
Höttges indicated that SpaceX faces challenges in spectrum acquisition and building a large-scale ground infrastructure. He cautioned against immediate disruption, comparing Starlink Mobile's potential impact to that of Tesla in the automotive sector, implying a gradual but significant shift.
Despite his cautionary stance, Höttges affirmed that Deutsche Telekom is taking SpaceX's ambitions seriously. He noted SpaceX's comprehensive ecosystem, including chipsets, data centers, AI, and satellites, which could enable a vertically integrated communication service. Commercial service for Starlink Mobile's 5G offering is slated for early 2028.
Deutsche Telekom itself has a complex relationship with Starlink, currently being the exclusive provider for its version 1 in the US and planning to offer the second-gen service in European dead zones next year. The company is also part of broader European collaborations to foster satellite services and reduce market fragmentation.
