SpaceX Calls for Openness Amid Satellite Traffic Jams
9 Oct
Summary
- SpaceX urges global satellite operators to share location data.
- Lack of data sharing leads to dangerous close calls in orbit.
- SpaceX's Starlink satellites perform 1,000 avoidance maneuvers daily.

SpaceX is urging all satellite operators to enhance transparency by sharing real-time data on their spacecraft's positions and planned movements. Michael Nicolls, a SpaceX executive, emphasized this need at a recent international conference, citing numerous instances where Starlink satellites narrowly avoided collisions with other spacecraft. These close calls, some involving conjunctions of only tens of meters, occurred due to operators not sharing their ephemeris data or accounting for others' maneuvers.
SpaceX, operating over 11,000 Starlink satellites and planning for a future megaconstellation, has taken steps to mitigate risks, including lowering its constellation's orbit. The company also actively publishes its own satellite ephemeris data and utilizes its Stargaze system for collision detection. However, Nicolls stressed that this is insufficient without widespread cooperation.
While companies like Amazon's Project Kuiper are reportedly sharing data, challenges remain with some international operators, particularly from China and Russia, who have been less forthcoming. Nicolls' appeal is for a universal standard of data sharing to ensure a safe and sustainable environment in low-Earth orbit for all.
