SpaceX Plans Massive Starship Launch Surge
19 Oct
Summary
- SpaceX proposes 456 Starship launches per year.
- This could put over 68,400 tons of payload into orbit.
- Environmental and regulatory reviews will take years.

SpaceX has initiated discussions with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regarding a significant expansion of its Starship launch operations. The company's "Notice of Intent" outlines a plan to increase launches from its Starbase facility in Texas, eventually aiming for an astounding 456 Starship-Super Heavy launches per year.
This ambitious two-phase plan proposes 100 launches annually in Phase 1, followed by 456 launches per year in Phase 2, which is expected to commence within several years of Phase 1 beginning. These launches are designed to place an estimated 68,400 tons of payload into Earth orbit annually.
However, achieving these numbers hinges on extensive environmental impact studies and regulatory approval from the FAA. These reviews will assess the effects of high-energy launches on various ecosystems, resources, and populations, a process that could span several years.
Furthermore, SpaceX is concurrently developing a second Starbase in Louisiana with 10 launch pads. If similar launch ambitions are pursued there, the company could potentially exceed 2,000 rocket launches annually, delivering close to 300,000 tons of payload into orbit, fundamentally reshaping the space industry.
