Space Force Sparks $60M Satellite Network Race

The U.S. Space Force recently granted $60 million in contracts to five companies to test the integration of diverse commercial satellite systems with its upcoming Space Data Network (SDN). Amazon LEO for Government, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, Rocket Lab, and York Space Systems each secured $12 million for this initiative, which commenced on or around August 13, 2026. This development is crucial for the SDN, a planned low Earth orbit communications architecture designed for high-volume data transfer between satellites and ground stations.

SpaceX is developing the core backbone of the SDN, known as SDN-B, with optical crosslinks for satellite-to-satellite data routing. The recent awards focus on ensuring that systems from other vendors can effectively connect to this backbone, a key step in the Space Force's strategy to foster a multi-vendor environment. This approach aims to prevent vendor lock-in and enhance network resilience, allowing for data rerouting in case of disruptions.

The awarded funds will support prototyping demonstrations over approximately nine months, validating how commercial systems can communicate through the core network. This includes testing ground-to-space and space-to-space data transport. Additionally, part of the funding supports the 'space exchange point' concept, which envisions orbital routers for connecting separate commercial and government networks to the SDN backbone. The selected companies were chosen through the Space Data Network consortium, an industry group established to address these complex integration challenges.
