Sony Revives Popular M4 Headphones with Updated Tuning

Sony is capitalizing on the enduring popularity of its WH-1000XM4 headphones by releasing a "second generation" model, the WH-1000XM4C. These new headphones come in fresh colorways and feature "updated sound tuning" to align with current listening preferences, according to Sony. The WH-1000XM4C list for $300 and are launched alongside the WH-CH730N ($180) and WH-CH530 ($80) models.

The WH-1000XM4C headphones retain the classic design with minor cosmetic adjustments. Key upgrades include Bluetooth 6.0, replacing the previous 5.1, and a new 10-band equalizer with a gaming EQ for enhanced sound personalization. Noise-canceling performance remains consistent thanks to the QN1 chip and four microphones, though battery life has decreased slightly to 27 hours with noise canceling on, down from the original 30 hours.

The WH-CH730N, a new midrange offering, provides a compelling value proposition at $180. This model features a foldable design and an improved sound profile, promising up to 50 hours of battery life with noise canceling enabled. While its noise-canceling capabilities are not as advanced as Sony's flagship models, they have been enhanced with Dual Noise Sensor technology.

Sony's entry-level WH-CH530 on-ear headphones receive minor upgrades, including improved voice-calling performance with AI noise reduction, despite a $20 price increase. These models are aimed at a younger demographic and feature a volume limiter. However, they lack wired listening capabilities and do not include a carrying pouch. All new value models are expected to see discounts during the upcoming holiday shopping season.
