Sony's Clip-On Earbuds: Sound Leakage Solved?

Sony Group Corp. has introduced its latest consumer audio product, the $230 LinkBuds Clip, featuring an innovative clip-on design. These earbuds are designed to sit outside the ear canal, offering users the ability to remain aware of their surroundings while listening to music or podcasts. This open-ear style aims to improve comfort for extended wear and facilitate conversations without removing the earbuds.

Addressing a common concern with open-ear designs, Sony has integrated a "sound leakage reduction" mode. This feature aims to minimize audio bleed, making the earbuds less audible to those nearby. Additionally, a "voice boost" mode enhances clarity for spoken content like podcasts and audiobooks. The earbuds also boast an IPX4 water resistance rating.

For extended listening sessions, the LinkBuds Clip provide up to nine hours of playback on a single charge. The accompanying charging case extends the total playback time to 37 hours. Sony has also implemented fast charging, offering one hour of playback from just three minutes of charging. The company further claims improved call quality, utilizing AI-powered noise reduction and bone conduction technology.

Sony is differentiating its new earbuds through color and style options, moving away from the minimalist aesthetic of competitors like Apple's AirPods. The company will offer a variety of $25 case covers to allow for personalization. This move mirrors other brands like Bose and Motorola, which have also focused on distinctive designs and colors in their recent open-ear earbud releases.
