Snapseed Camera App: Android Left Behind?

The iOS version of Google's photo editor, Snapseed, has been updated to include robust camera functionality, a significant overhaul from its previous state. This update introduces a dedicated camera icon, offering a viewfinder and manual controls for ISO, shutter speed, and focus, alongside film emulation modes.

Users can also apply custom looks directly from the camera and fine-tune photos post-capture. This advanced camera integration is currently exclusive to iPhones, with the Android version of Snapseed having not received a substantial update since May 2024.

This disparity has led to considerable frustration among Android users, who have voiced their disappointment on platforms like Reddit, viewing the situation as unfair. Despite Snapseed being a Google product, its Android iteration appears to be lagging significantly behind its iOS counterpart.

While Google has not provided a specific reason, factors such as the diverse range of Android devices requiring extensive testing, and potentially independent development teams for each platform, may contribute to the delay. It is also possible that the iOS version is prioritized due to popularity.

However, Snapseed's product lead has confirmed that updates for the Android app are planned. While the exact features of these future updates remain unconfirmed, it is highly anticipated that the new camera functionality will eventually be rolled out to Android users. The company indicated in December 2025 that an Android app update was only a few months away, suggesting a release could be imminent.
