A California company, xMEMS Lab, has developed a novel cooling chip small enough to integrate into smart glasses.
The XMC-1200 chip, introduced in July 2026, is described as the world's smallest active micro fan. Measuring 46mm², it is engineered to bring active cooling to slim, space-constrained smart glasses.
This chip employs a solid-state design, vibrating to dissipate heat rather than using traditional spinning components. It can reduce internal temperatures by up to 10 degrees Celsius while consuming minimal electricity.
This technology is a scaled-down version of the XMC-2400, previously released for portable electronics. xMEMS is currently offering the XMC-1200 as engineering samples to manufacturers, with production readiness expected in Q4 2027.
The cooling solution aims to prevent smart glasses from throttling performance or necessitating design compromises due to overheating, enhancing both functionality and safety.
