AI Shopping Carts: More Items, More Money Spent
14 Aug
Summary
- Smart carts may increase shopper spending by 32%.
- Shoppers using AI carts bought 25% more items.
- Retailers could see significant revenue gains from AI carts.

New research from Bayes Business School suggests that artificial intelligence-equipped shopping carts may encourage shoppers to spend more. A study found that users of these smart carts spent 32% more on average, purchased 25% more items, and dedicated 23% more time to shopping.
While the technology offers potential revenue gains for retailers, researchers caution consumers. They warn that these smart carts could become new advertising platforms, steering shoppers toward specific promotions. Concerns exist about digital manipulation and privacy issues, similar to those found in online shopping.
The study analyzed over 12,000 shopping trips from a German supermarket chain. Researchers observed that while frequent users, or "super users," who interacted with the cart screen over 20 times, bought more items and stayed longer, they did not necessarily spend more money. This behavior might suggest these users are more engaged with the technology for enjoyment rather than making impulse purchases.
However, the researchers emphasize that correlation does not equal causation. Those who choose to use smart carts might inherently be different shoppers. Nonetheless, the findings point to a trend where smart cart technology is associated with increased spending and engagement within the retail environment.
