16 Oct
Summary
- iOS 27 update doesn't automatically grant Siri AI access.
- Users must actively join a waitlist to enable Siri AI.
- Siri AI shows improvements but still has limitations.

Apple's recent iOS 27 update has generated significant excitement around its new Siri AI capabilities. However, many users who have updated their devices may not actually be utilizing this advanced functionality. The new Siri interface, which includes a glowing effect, does not signify that Siri AI is active. Instead, users are required to actively join a waitlist to enable the feature. This involves agreeing to share text and audio interactions with Apple to help improve foundation models.
Once users gain access, Siri AI does show improvements. For instance, it correctly answered a question about the future season of "Ted Lasso," a query that the older Siri version mishandled. It also provided accurate answers to technical questions about "VA vs. Watts" and complex terminology related to tree structures, outperforming its predecessor which often provided misinterpreted or useless responses.
Despite these advancements, Siri AI is not yet perfect. It still struggles with certain on-phone functions, such as listing Bluetooth-connected devices. The visual indicator for Siri AI has also changed from a full-screen glow to a less distinct bubble. Users experiencing subpar Siri performance on iOS 27 are advised to check their Siri settings and request beta access, as approval can be quite rapid, sometimes occurring within minutes.
