Siri AI Blocked in EU: Apple Blames Regulators
9 Jun
Summary
- Apple states EU regulators refused constructive dialogue on privacy.
- European Commission insists Apple's decision to delay Siri AI.
- EU's Digital Markets Act requires interoperability for AI services.

Apple's advanced Siri AI, set to launch with iOS and iPadOS, faces a delay in the European Union. Apple attributes this to regulatory hurdles, specifically the EU's Digital Markets Act (DMA), suggesting regulators refused to engage constructively on solutions that balance privacy and security.
The European Commission, however, contends that the decision to withhold Siri AI from the EU is entirely Apple's. A spokesperson clarified that Apple requested an 18-month exemption from the DMA's interoperability requirements, which aims to prevent tech giants from blocking competitors. Apple claims this rule would necessitate giving AI systems broad access to user devices, potentially compromising security.
Apple proposed a "Trusted System Agent" solution but sought a lengthy rollout period, which the Commission denied. While Siri AI will be available on macOS and visionOS in the EU, its release on iOS and iPadOS remains without a firm timeline. Similar regulatory considerations are also delaying Siri AI's launch in China.
