SF Mayor Targets Autonomous Vehicles After July 4 Traffic Nightmare

San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie has urged state regulators to implement more robust rules for autonomous vehicles (AVs). This call comes after Waymo robotaxis became stranded and immobile in heavy July 4th traffic, exacerbating gridlock and affecting thousands of residents. The incident, which also occurred during a December power outage, demonstrated to Lurie that California's current regulatory framework is inadequate for AV operations during major incidents.

Mayor Lurie proposed that AV manufacturers must demonstrate core operational capabilities, including the immediate removal of stranded vehicles from travel lanes and real-time route adaptation. He also called for AV companies to share operational data with local agencies and to prove their ability to handle large traffic influxes through testing. These proposed requirements aim to strengthen AV operations rather than hinder them.
