The Seoul Metropolitan Government is enhancing its late-night autonomous taxi service in Gangnam District. Starting August 20, 2026, the number of operating vehicles will increase from seven to 19. This service runs on weekdays between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. the following day.
Operations are managed by SWM, deploying 13 vehicles, and Kakao Mobility, with six. The city is also advancing autonomous driving technology. Following regulatory changes, Seoul seeks approval to allow autonomous driving across all zones in Gangnam, including child protection areas. By November 2026, Level 4 autonomous taxis without a driver are planned for Sangam-dong.
The autonomous taxis can be booked via the Kakao T app, with fares from 4,800 to 6,700 won, including a late-night surcharge. Up to three passengers can utilize the service. The government anticipates improved user convenience and a boost to the nighttime economy, promising further advancements in mobility services.
